Selects vs. Classics

Wednesday, August 3, 2016

The Selects clinched the eighth and final KFL playoff berth on Wednesday night, winning a slugfest 11-6 over the Classics.

The Selects jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, as seven of the game's first eight batters reached base, courtesy of five singles, a hit-by-pitch, and a catcher's interference call. But the boys in green left the bases loaded and the Classics immediately roared back, thanks to three hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch - though they too left the bases loaded. After one complete inning, it was a 4-4 tie with a combined six runners left on base. A pitcher's duel was evidently not in the cards.

After the Selects went quietly in the second, Jodie Schnarr hit a solo blast to straightaway centre, giving the Classics the 5-4 edge. Selects' starter Scott Clark then settled down to escape the frame with no further damage. The Selects responded with a five-run third inning to a take a 9-5 lead they would not relinquish. Rick Hames allowed one run on just two hits with three strikeouts over three innings of relief, while the Selects tacked on two more in the fifth for the 11-6 final.

Hames had a good night at the plate as well, going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Shayne Riepert (3-4, 4 RBI, run), Mike Brown (3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs), and Kevin Ryrie (0-1, 2 BB, RBI, 3 runs) also made major offensive contributions in the win.

MVP: Rick Hames, 1B/P
