Selects vs. Classics

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

The Selects rode a six-run third inning to their second win of the season Wednesday night, downing the Classics, 7-4. It was the Classics, however, who opened the scoring in the top of the third, when Brad Maunder walked and came around to count on an Al Staats RBI single. The boys in green responded in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and cashing six runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Chad Fink.

The Selects pushed their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Tim Coverdale stroked a leadoff triple and scored on Jamie Ridley's RBI single. But the Classics began to make some noise in the top of the fifth. With two out and two on, the Selects made a pair of errors before Bob Underwood hit a two-run single to make the score 7-4. Shayne Riepert then came on in relief of starter Scott Clark and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Fortunately for Selects' fans, Riepert calmly struck out the next batter to seal the victory and earn his first save of the season.

Clark picked up the win, allowing six hits and four runs (three of them unearned) while striking out six. Ridley paced the Selects' offense, going 2-2 with a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Coverdale (1-3, 3B, RBI, two runs), Fink (1-2, 2B, BB, SB, 2 RBI, run), and Brad Cleasby (1-2, BB, SB, RBI) also had good games in the win.

The Selects look to keep the hot start going on Monday night at 9 p.m. against the Kings (1-0-1).

MVP: Jamie Ridley, 3B
