Selects squeak one out

Selects vs. Red Sox

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

The Selects improved to 5-1 Wednesday night, riding the arm of Shayne Riepert to a tightly contested 2-1 win over the Red Sox.

The Sox struck first in the top of the second, when Nathan Clarke stroked a leadoff triple to the fence in centre and came in to count on a misplayed grounder to second. The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Riepert helped his cause with a leadoff walk and scored on a triple by Mike Boshart, tying the game at one. Brad Cleasby promptly launched a sacrifice fly to left to score Boshart with the eventual game-winner, a result that would not come without some theatrics.

With the Selects still up 2-1 heading to the final frame, the Red Sox put the first two runners aboard via a Dan McRae single and an Andrew Parkinson walk. After they advanced on a ground out, the Selects issued an intentional pass to Jaron Lefler to load the bases with one out. Riepert took it from there. When Eric Johnson hit a high chopper, he pounced on the ball, bare-handing it and throwing home in one motion to cut down McRae and preserve the one-run lead. Riepert then calmly struck out the next batter to end the game. His line: 7 innings, 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 13 K.

The Selects are right back at it Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Razorbacks (0-4). The game will be televised on Rogers TV (Cable 20) via tape-delay at 9 p.m.
