Selects win second straight

Selects vs. Moonshiners

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

The Selects put up seven unanswered runs to win their second straight on Tuesday night, beating the Moonshiners 7-1 to improve to 7-5 on the season.

Moonshiners starter Chris VanVolkenburg held the Selects' offense in check through three frames and the game entered the bottom of the third as a scoreless tie. In that frame, Selects' starter Chad Fink surrendered a leadoff triple to Matt Sims, but looked poised to escape the inning after a strikeout, a pop-out to second, and a grounder to short, but the grounder was mishandled, allowing the 'Shiners to grab a 1-0 lead. It would be short-lived.

With VanVolkenburg out of the game, the Selects welcomed new pitcher Jordan Emick with a three-run fourth. Jamie Ridley worked a leadoff walk and Fink followed with a hard-hit liner off the pitcher, which ricocheted around and left the Selects with runners on the corners and nobody out. Mike Welton then grounded out, but cashed Ridley in the process to tie the game at one. After a Brent Furtney single and Dan Clark fielder's choice, Scott Clark came through with a two-out single to cash them both and give the Selects a 3-1 lead they would not relinquish.

The boys in green added two apiece in the fifth and sixth innings to solidify the 7-1 win. Ridley paced the offense, going 2-2 with two walks, a triple, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Fink, meanwhile, improved to 4-0 on the year, allowing just the one unearned run on three hits in four innings of work, while striking out four. Shayne Riepert tacked on two innings of scoreless relief.

The Selects will look to make it three in a row on Thursday, when they go up against the league's top offense, the Smoke (5-4-1).

MVP: Jamie Ridley, 3B
