Selects fall to .500

Selects vs. Diamond Jaxx

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

The Selects lost their second straight on Tuesday night, falling to the Diamond Jaxx 7-3 to drop to 7-7 on the season.

Will Peirce opened the scoring for the Jaxx in the top of the first. After stroking a leadoff single, he stole second, moved to third on a Jamie Crickmore single, and scored on a Matt Gregory groundout. But the Selects would pull even in the second inning, when Mike Brown walked, moved to second on a Scott Clark sacrifice bunt, and came in to count on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Mike Tyler.

Unfortunately, it would be all the offense the Selects could muster until the seventh inning, while the Jaxx added one in the third, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take a commanding 7-1 lead. The Selects sent seven batters to the plate in the final frame, but their mini-rally was cut short with two on and the score at 7-3 when Jaxx pitcher Kevin Clugston registered his 10th strikeout of the night.

Mike Tyler (1-2, BB, RBI, run) and Jamie Ridley (2-4) paced the offense, while Scott Clark took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits over four and one-third innings. Shayne Riepert finished the game in relief, allowing three runs (all unearned) on four hits, while striking out four.

The Selects now find themselves in a tie for fifth in the Black Division and will look to start a winning streak Thursday night at 9 p.m. against the upstart Phillies (9-4-1).

MVP: Mike Tyler, LF
