Selects keep on winning

Selects vs. Kings

Monday, July 29, 2013

The Selects won a season-best fourth straight on Monday night, beating the Kings in a key divisional match-up, 9-2. The game ended up being somewhat anti-climactic, as the Kings' catcher didn't show up and they struggled defensively with a few players out of position.

Still, the Kings took an early 1-0 lead when Greg Hammell hit a two-out, opposite field home run in the top of the first. It would be their only lead of the game, and a short-lived one at that. The Selects scored three in the bottom of the inning, keyed by triples from Jamie Ridley, Shayne Riepert, and Mike Welton. The Selects' offense would add six more, punctuated by a two-run bomb to straightaway centre off the bat of Mike Tyler.

Over the course of their four-game winning streak, the Selects' offense has come alive, scoring just over nine runs per game in that span. On Monday night, they were led by Tyler (2-2, 2B, HR, SB, 2 RBI, run), Ridley (2-4, 3B, 2 RBI, 2 runs), and Tim Coverdale (1-3, sac fly, 2 RBI).

Riepert picked up his third win of the season, allowing two runs on four hits over four innings, while striking out five. Scott Clark worked three scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just one hit and striking out four. The Selects (11-7) now look to round out their regular season schedule on a high note, as they take on the Bulldogs (8-6) next Tuesday at 9 p.m.

MVP: Mike Brown, CF
