Selects take game one

Selects vs. Moonshiners

Thursday, August 22, 2013

The Selects rode efficient hitting and a strong effort from pitcher Shayne Riepert to a 4-3 win in game one of their quarterfinal series with the Moonshiners Thursday night.

The Selects took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kevin Ryrie stroked a leadoff single and caught the 'Shiners defense napping on Glen Hall's ensuing sacrifice bunt, going first to third. The 'Shiners tried to recover, but the throw to third went into left field, allowing Ryrie to scamper home with the game's first run.

The score would remain unchanged until the top of the third when Derek Mitchell hit a leadoff home run to left-centre, knotting the game at 1-1. The Selects would quickly respond in the bottom half, as Ryrie again singled and Hall, running for him, came into score when Jamie Ridley reached on a two-out error by the Moonshiners' third baseman. As Riepert continued to cruise, the Selects made it 3-1 in the fifth. Hall hit a two-out single and Ridley followed with a drive to centre that the fielder couldn't handle, allowing pinch-runner Mike Boshart to score from first.

The Moonshiners shaved the lead to 3-2 in the sixth after a Matt Sims single and a Jeremy deLeeuw walk set up a first and third situation. The Selects caught deLeeuw attempting to steal second, allowing Sims to score. They would get that run back in the bottom half when Brad Cleasby walked, moved to third on a pair of passed balls, and came into score on a Dan Clark groundout, restoring the two-run cushion. In the top of the seventh, the 'Shiners cut the lead to 4-3 and got the tying run to third, but Riepert induced a grounder to short to end the game.

Riepert allowed three runs on seven hits in the win, while striking out five. The Selects will now look to close out the series on Wednesday at 7.
