Selects advance with 4-0 win

Selects vs. Moonshiners

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

On the strength of a virtuoso performance from pitcher Shayne Riepert, the Selects won 4-0 Tuesday night in the deciding game of their quarterfinal series with the Moonshiners. Facing elimination, Riepert picked a good time to have his best start of the season, allowing just two hits in a complete game shutout, while striking out 14.

The Moonshiners threatened in the top of the first when Jeff Vanderharst blooped a leadoff single, stole second, and moved to third when the throw went to centre field. Riepert worked out of the jam, however, striking out the next two batters before inducing an inning-ending grounder to third base. The Selects had a similar start in the bottom half, but made the most of it. After Kevin Ryrie got on base with an infield single and moved to third on a pair of passed balls, Mike Brown ripped a drive to centre, cashing Ryrie with a sacrifice fly.

The Selects doubled their lead in the second inning, when Riepert tripled down the right field line and came in to count on a Mike Tyler grounder to the second baseman, making it 2-0 Selects. They tacked on two more for the eventual 4-0 win, with Chad Fink scoring in both the fourth and sixth innings, courtesy of a Tim Coverdale double and a Reed Laughlin grounder respectively.

With the win, the Selects advance to the semi-finals, where they will meet Bell Cartage, the defending KFL champions. That series begins Thursday at 9 p.m.
