Two Games, Two Shutouts

Selects vs. Athletics

Thursday, May 7, 2015

The Selects extended their shutout streak to 14 innings Thursday night, getting timely outs en route to a 6-0 win over the Athletics, who put at least one man aboard in each frame, but couldn't cash.

The Selects struck first in the bottom of the second when Tom Allan ripped a two-out double down the right field line to score Aaron McCaw. The Athletics looked poised to draw even in each of the next two frames, but Scott Clark induced inning-ending grounders to strand five Athletics and maintain the Selects' 1-0 lead.

In the home half of the fourth, the Selects made it 2-0 when Darren Strickland and McCaw notched singles to put runners on the corners, then executed a textbook double steal to bring Strickland home. Again, the Athletics looked to answer, as back-to-back singles from Brandon Viol and Dan Polischuk ended Clark's outing, but Shayne Riepert kept him in line for the win, inducing a sac bunt and a groundout to second. The Selects then blew the game open with a four-run fifth, keyed by singles from Chad Fink (who put together a four-hit night), Mike Brown, and Strickland.

MVP: Darren Strickland, 1B
