Selects Win Fourth Straight

Selects vs. Classics

Thursday, May 14, 2015

The Selects improved to 4-0 Thursday night, riding a breakout sixth inning to a 7-2 come-from-behind win over the Classics. Shayne Riepert picked up his second win of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, getting timely outs all night. He also had five strikeouts.

The Classics struck first in the top of the third, as John Sexton hit a leadoff single and came around to count on a two-out single from Trevor Brohman. They pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the next frame when Brett Kropf drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out Sexton single. But that would be all they'd get on this night.

The Selects drew even with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, when Brett Pfeifer scorched one over the fence in left-centre, cashing a Chad Fink single in the process. Both teams threatened in the fifth, but couldn't score; the Selects looked particularly dangerous after a double by Aaron McCaw, a single by Scott Clark, and a walk to Brad Cleasby loaded the bases, but Classics pitcher Martin Mauviel escaped with an inning-ending double play.

The score remained 2-2 in what looked like a harmless bottom of the sixth, as Mauviel retired the first two Selects' hitters. But then the bats came alive. Pfeifer singled. Riepert doubled. McCaw singled. Clark tripled. Kevin Ryrie singled. Cleasby singled. Fink singled. All of a sudden, the Selects led 7-2. Clark came on in relief and worked a scoreless seventh to preserve the win.
