Selects Survive in Extras

Selects vs. Bulldogs

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

With two 11th hour scratches from the lineup, the Selects called upon Steven Riepert to make his KFL debut and managed to get the job done, beating the Bulldogs 5-4 in eight innings on Tuesday night to remain undefeated at 6-0.

The Selects jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, when Kevin Ryrie was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and came in to score when the Bulldogs' catcher dropped a third strike and hit Brad Cleasby with his throw to first. Brett Pfeifer followed with a monstrous two-run homer, clearing both fences in right.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth, when the Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate and put up four runs, aided by a couple of Selects errors. The Selects would bounce right back, courtesy of a clutch two-out double by Tom Allan to cash Scott Clark, making it 4-4.

After neither team could break the tie in a swiftly paced seven innings, the international tie-breaker took effect and the game headed to extras. In the top half of the inning, relief pitcher Corey Jackson notched a strikeout and a pop out, looking poised to escape unscathed. But Mike Brown had other ideas, ripping a 3-1 pitch to centre to plate Shayne Riepert with the go-ahead run. The Selects pitcher took it from there. After issuing an intentional pass to Chris Davis to load the bases with one out, Riepert got a strikeout and a groundout to preserve the complete game, 16-strikeout win.
