Selects Top Thunder In Eight

Selects vs. Thunder

Wednesday, July 8, 2015

The Selects improved to 10-5 on the season and 2-0 in extra innings Wednesday night, downing the Thunder 9-7 in a see-saw affair.

The Selects struck first, as Kevin Ryrie doubled, stole third, and scored on a Mike Welton sacrifice fly in the home half of the first. It would be the only scoring until the fourth, when a Mark Perry three-run homer gave the Thunder a 3-1 lead.

The Selects retook the lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on a barrage of singles from Brett Pfeifer, Ryrie, Brad Cleasby, and Darren Strickland, plus another sac fly from Welton. But Perry again had the answer for the Thunder, ripping an RBI double (his third hit of the day) to knot things at four and chase Selects' starter Scott Clark from the game.

After the Selects seized a 6-4 lead in the sixth with two-out singles from Mike Brown, Pfeifer, and Ryrie, the Thunder tied it up in the seventh and kept the Selects off the board in the bottom half, as Welton was called out at home with the would-be winning run. With the international tiebreaker in effect, the Thunder took a 7-6 lead, but Shayne Riepert ended it with a game-winning, three-run blast over the fence in centre.

MVP: Shayne Riepert, SS/P
