Smoke Keep Selects At Bay

Selects vs. Smoke

Monday, July 27, 2015

The Selects amassed 10 hits Monday night, but could only muster two runs, falling to the Smoke, 4-2. With the loss, the Selects sit at 12-6 on the season.

The Smoke grabbed the early lead in the bottom of the first when Paul Clemens singled, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Brian Kron single. The Selects threatened in the second with singles from Darren Strickland, Tim Coverdale, and Shayne Riepert, but right fielder Kron threw Coverdale out at the plate to keep the Selects off the board.

After pitcher Scott Clark retired the side in order, the Selects tied things up in the third when Kevin Ryrie singled, stole second, and scored on a Brett Pfeifer single. But the tie would be short-lived. In the bottom half, the Smoke put up three runs, keyed by an RBI triple from Kron, who then scored on an Adam Vanwyck sac fly to make it 4-1.

Strickland hit an opposite field blast to lead off the fourth, cutting the lead to 4-2, and Clark settled into a groove, keeping the Smoke from adding to their lead. The Selects threatened again in the fifth, but Ryrie was called out trying to score on a Mike Brown single. They then put two runners into scoring position in the seventh, but Smoke hurler Marc Geddes induced a grounder to seal the win.

MVP: Darren Strickland, 1B
