Selects Take Game One

Selects vs. Classics

Tuesday, September 1, 2015

The Selects never trailed in game one of their quarterfinal series with the Classics, opening the postseason with a 5-2 win on Tuesday night.

The visiting Selects jumped ahead in the first when Brett Pfeifer launched an opposite field, two-out, two-run homer with a Kevin Ryrie single aboard. The score would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the third when John Sexton, Brandon Roeder, and Andrew Mathies loaded the bases for the Classics with nobody out. After Sexton scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to 2-1, Selects' pitcher Shayne Riepert escaped the inning with a pair of ground balls, including an inning-ending double play after Roeder got caught in a rundown between third and home.

Riepert kept the Classics in check for the next couple frames until the Selects could add some insurance in the top of the fifth. With Tom Allan aboard and two outs, three straight hits from Ryrie, Scott Clark, and Darren Strickland extended the Selects' advantage to 5-1. The Classics added one in the bottom of the seventh, but could get no closer, as Riepert went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven.

The Selects will look to complete the two-game sweep on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
