Selects Win Slugfest Opener

Selects vs. Thunder

Monday, May 9, 2016

The Selects jumped out to a considerable early lead and held on to win their season opener over the Thunder, 16-9, leaving lovers of stingy defense sorely disappointed.

Scott Clark got the start for the Selects and tossed three tidy frames, allowing three hits and striking out three while keeping the Thunder off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, his offense went to work, jumping out to an 11-0 lead.

Ethan Cox came on in relief, making his KFL debut, and allowed one run in a solid fourth inning before the Selects tacked on five more for a 16-1 advantage. The Thunder finished strong, however, putting together an eight-run fifth thanks to some solid hitting and a couple costly Selects miscues.

Offensively, the Selects' 16-hit onslaught was led by Brad Cleasby (2-2, 2 BB, 3 runs), Darren Strickland (2-4, HR, 2B, 5 RBIs, run), Brett Pfeifer (2-3, BB, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Clark (1-1, 3B, BB, RBI, 2 runs), and Mike Brown (1-1, sac fly, 3 RBIs, run). In addition to Cox, Tyler Sager (1-2, 2B, RBI, run) and Andrew Mathies (1-2, RBI, run) both contributed in their Selects' debuts.

The game marked Sager's first foray into the KFL, while Mathies joined the squad after stints with the Phillies, Razorbacks, and Classics. The boys in green were very pleased to welcome their newest additions with a win.

MVP: Darren Strickland, 1B
