Selects vs. Athletics

Tuesday, June 14, 2016

The Athletics put together a nine-run sixth inning on Tuesday night, leaving the Selects bruised and battered - literally and metaphorically - after a 12-9 loss.

The Selects opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of walks to Brad Cleasby, Tim Coverdale, and Glen Hall, and singles from Kevin Ryrie and Andrew Mathies. Meanwhile, Scott Clark held the Athletics hitless through the first three frames, but the Selects were unable to add to their lead.

In the top of the fourth, Dean Clement and Ryan Koscher both scored when a throw to first ended up in right field, but Clark notched a key strikeout to keep things tied at two. The Selects regained the lead in the bottom half when Mike Brown singled and came in to score on a Kevin Ryrie grounder to third. The play was nonetheless costly, as Ryrie's foot landed on the first baseman's and he left the game with a severely sprained ankle.

After the Athletics tied it in the fifth, the Selects again answered in the bottom half, thanks to a Coverdale single that cashed a Mathies walk for the 4-3 edge. It was not to be on this night, however, as the Athletics sent 14 men to the plate in a nine-run sixth, grabbing a 12-4 advantage. The Selects put up five in the bottom half, keyed by RBI doubles from Cleasby and Dan Clark, but they could get no closer. Coverdale (2-2, 2 BBs, RBI) led the offense in the loss, while Ethan Cox struck out a pair in his second relief appearance this year.
