Bad Inning Sinks Selects in Opener

Selects vs. Jaxx

Monday, May 15, 2017

The Selects dropped their season opener Monday night, 4-2 to the Diamond Jaxx, despite outhitting them 6-2.

The Selects jumped out to the early lead, as leadoff hitter Tyler Sager singled and came in to score on a double from Darren Strickland, who was then cashed courtesy of a Dan Clark single. For a while, that looked like it might be all the offense they'd need.

In his fourth season as a Select, Brett Pfeifer got his first start after making a few relief appearances last season, and he cruised through the first three innings, facing the minimum. Alas, the Jaxx jumped out to a 4-2 lead with a four-run fourth, courtesy of two walks, a costly error, and a two-run double by Warren Williams. Jaxx hurler Kevin Buckley did the rest, putting up six consecutive zeroes en route to a complete-game six-hitter.

Despite being saddled with the loss, Pfeifer pitched tremendously, allowing just two hits and striking out eight over seven innings. Sager led the offense, notching singles in all three of his plate appearances.

MVP: Tyler Sager, RF
