Classics Take Opener 6-3

Selects vs. Classics

Monday, September 19, 2011

In a rematch of the 2010 KFL Finals, the veteran Classics again opened the championship series with a victory, downing the Selects 6-3.

The Classics took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when John Sexton reached on an error and came in to count on a Sam Forbes two-out single, marking the only scoring in the game's first four innings. Forbes would again key the Classics offense in the fifth, stroking a two-out, two-run home run to right field just pitches after Glen Hall appeared to pick off a runner at first for the inning's third out. The Selects had a tough time bouncing back from that blow. After two-out walks to Jodie Schnarr and John Sexton in the bottom of the sixth, Jay Schnarr hit a towering fly just beyond the glove of Zack Anstett, scoring two more. Forbes stepped up and delivered another single to round out a three-hit, four RBI night and give the Classics a 6-0 lead.

Facing a long road back, the Selects refused to lie down, opening the top of the seventh with four consecutive singles from Jamie Hickling, Trevor Botting, Kevin Ryrie, and Reed Laughlin to chase Classics' pitcher Mel Ross from the game. They would cut the lead to 6-3 before reliever Sean Geehan ended the threat to give the Classics a 1-0 series lead.

Mel Ross allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out 13 in the win. Doug Hoffman allowed six runs, four unearned, on eight hits, while striking out eight in a losing effort.

MVP: Jamie Hickling, 1B
