Selects vs. Smoke

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

The Selects downed the Smoke 3-1 in the opening game of their quarter-final series Tuesday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

The Smoke jumped out to an early lead on a first inning home run from Travis Murdock, but it would be the only offense they would muster on the evening. Selects' hurler Doug Hoffman shut the door the rest of the way, allowing five hits while striking out 15.

Meanwhile, the Selects put up all the offense they would need in the bottom of the second. Jamie Hickling drew a leadoff walk and Tim Coverdale followed with a hard single up the middle. Brent Furtney then delivered an RBI single to cash Hickling, at that point tying the game at 1. After Hoffman walked and both Furtney and Reed Laughlin, pinch-running for Hoffman, advanced on a passed ball, Scott Clark delivered a clutch, two-out single up the middle to cash both runs.

The Selects now look to advance to their sixth consecutive KFL semi-final with a win on Monday night.
