Selects vs. Smoke
Thursday, August 11, 2011
The Selects clinched the division title Thursday night with a convincing 10-0 win over the Smoke. Tim Coverdale blasted a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the first, his first long ball as a Select, providing more than enough of a cushion for pitcher Doug Hoffman. Picking up his sixth win of the season, Hoffman threw a five-inning, no-hit shutout, allowing just one walk and striking out six.
On the offensive side of the ball, the boys in green put up another eight runs, led by Coverdale (2-2, HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Scott Clark (3-3, 2B, 3B, BB, 3 RBI, run), and Dan Fogal (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, run).
The Selects and Smoke are now set to face off in the quarterfinals, marking the fourth time the two teams have met in the playoffs in the last five years; the Selects have come out on top on all three previous occasions, including last year’s semi-finals.
MVP: Scott Clark, SS
