Selects Hold Off Sox

Selects vs. Black Sox

Wednesday, August 3, 2011

The Selects took a 5-0 lead on a rainy Wednesday night in New Dundee and held on to even their season series with the Black Sox with a 5-3 win. With the win, the Selects hold a half-game edge on the Sox in the airtight Black Division.

The Selects took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Mike Brown walked and scored on a passed ball, and Dan Clark walked and came in to count on a Mike Welton sacrifice fly to right. They then extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third on five consecutive singles by Clark, Kevin Ryrie, Welton, Jamie Hickling, and Reed Laughlin.

Meanwhile, Doug Hoffman held the Black Sox offense in check through four innings, until his defense allowed three unearned runs in the top of the fifth. Jason Clayfield hit a one-out triple and came in to count on a passed ball. Things got even more interesting when Chris Dietrich and Al Taylor both walked and scored on a Marc Geddes fly to centre that was misplayed by Brown. Fortunately, Hoffman struck out the next batter to end the inning and preserve the win.

The Selects play a pair of perennial rivals next week, the Smoke and Diamond Jaxx, to round out their regular season schedule and determine their final playoff position.

MVP: Dan Clark, 3B
