Jaxx Snap Selects' Win Streak

Selects vs. Diamond Jaxx

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

In a battle that pitted two streaking squads battling for Black Division supremacy on Wednesday night, the Diamond Jaxx came to play and the Selects' sticks did not respond, falling to their familiar foes 4-1 in a heated contest.

The Diamond Jaxx took an early lead when Ryan Ferber tripled home a Jason Farrelly walk, and then scored on a Mark Simmons single, staking the Jaxx to a 2-0 first inning lead they would not relinquish. After Kevin Clugston hit Mike Brown to lead off the bottom of the inning, the Selects cut the lead in half with a sac bunt from Dan Clark and an RBI single from Kevin Ryrie, but would get no closer. Clugston silenced the Selects' offense the rest of the way, striking out eight and allowing just two more hits - a pair of doubles to Ryrie, who was the lone offensive contributor for the boys in green.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Will Pierce doubled home Chad MacQueen and then came in to count on a Bryan Reeve single. Ryrie's standout offensive night would then be marred by a collision at home plate that broke his nose, as Reeve tried to add an additional insurance run. Ryrie held on to the Tim Coverdale throw to record the out, but the Selects still fell, 4-1. They hope to take a step closer to clinching a playoff position tomorrow night against the Kings.

Doug Hoffman scattered six hits and nine strikeouts over seven innings in the loss.
