Selects Falter Late Against Oshweken

Selects vs. Thunder

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

On a beautiful Tuesday night, it looked to be a promising game between the Selects and the Oksweken Thunder and it lived up to its billing with a fantastic back and forth game.

Pitcher Brent Furtney started things off in the first with a 1 out double to left, and was promptly knocked it by a Reed Laughlin single. The Selects then added to their lead in the second inning with a Tim Coverdale single plating Dan Clark. In the bottom of the second Ohsweken was threatening to come right back with the bases loaded, and only a leaping Laughlin grab in center prevented them from doing just that.

However, Ohsweken would manage 2 runs in the third however square up the game, at which point the pitchers bore down and left both teams off the scoresheet until the sixth inning. After loading the bases after the first 4 batters in the sixth, Kevin Ryrie hit a single up the middle cashing 2 runs. The Selects could not build on that however, with 2 base running errors getting the Thunder out of the inning.

The Thunder managed to score one run in the sixth and with the Selects looking to close out the game with a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff single followed by blistering triple to left field ended their hopes of back to back wins. After intentionally loading the bases, a single up the middle spoiled the chance of salvaging a point and left the stunned Selects leaving the field with a 5-4 loss.

Laughlin paced the Selects offense with a 2 for 2 night along with an RBI and run scored. While Furtney was working hard on both sides of the plate going 2 for 4 with a run scored and pitching 6 solid innings.

MVP: Brent Furtney, P
