Selects Hold On To Drop Bell Cartage

Selects vs. Bell Cartage

Monday, June 20, 2011

The name of the game was efficiency on Monday night, as the Selects handed Bell Cartage just their second loss of the season, 6-5, despite mustering just five hits.

Bell Cartage struck early, stringing together three hits and a walk in the top of the first, but notching only one run, as Scott Clark settled in with back-to-back strikeouts to leave the bases juiced. The Selects tied it up on just the second pitch of the bottom half of the inning when Mike Brown drove one to deep right-centre and legged out an inside-the-park home run.

Bell Cartage broke the tie in the top of the third, when Tim Dubois drew a one-out walk and Derek Martin knocked him in. But again the Selects had an answer. After Brent Furtney reached on an error and Clark drew a walk, Jamie Ridley and Kevin Ryrie notched RBI singles. Dan Clark then came through with a two-out, two-run double and came in to count on Tim Coverdale's RBI triple. When the dust settled at the end of the third inning, the Selects held a 6-2 lead they would not relinquish. Bell Cartage cut the lead to one with a three-run fourth inning, but Scott Clark, along with some timely defensive plays, shut the door the rest of the way.

Clark picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out nine and leaving seven runners stranded in the process. The Selects look to make it three in a row on Thursday as they do battle with divisional rivals, the Diamond Jaxx.
