Comeback Bid Falls Short

Selects vs. Kings

Tuesday, June 7, 2011

The Selects never led in their second loss of the season, a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of divisional rivals, the Kings.

In the top of the first, the Kings strung together a pair of singles, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and a reached on error to cash a pair, taking a quick 2-0 lead. Kevin Ryrie would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, ripping a double down third base before coming in to score on a pair of passed balls. Alas, the Kings came right back in the next inning, cashing two more on three hits and a walk to give themselves a 4-1 lead.

After the Kings added one in the top of the fifth, the Selects found themselves down to their final at-bat and staring at a 5-1 deficit. Finally, the offense hit its stride. After Ryrie notched a leadoff single and Jamie Hickling reached on an error, Dan Clark and Doug Hoffman brought them home with back-to-back RBI singles. Clark then scored on a Brent Furtney fielder's choice, cutting the lead to 5-4 with the tying run on first. The comeback was not to be, however, as Kings' hurler Fred Follings recorded the final out with his 13th strikeout of the evening.

Scott Clark fell to 3-1 on the season with the loss. Doug Hoffman pitched one and a third scoreless innings in relief, striking out a pair.
