Sox Win Tight One

Selects vs. Black Sox

Thursday, May 19, 2011

When the Selects and Black Sox meet, good games seem to invariably follow and this one was no different.

The Black Sox jumped to an early lead when Jason Clayfield cashed Chris Schuett with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, before the Selects tied it up in the top of the third on a Kevin Ryrie RBI single, knocking home Mike Brown. The Black Sox jumped right back in front in the bottom of the third on a two-run opposite field home run from Jeff Kolb, making it 3-1 for the Sox.

Showing a little early season resilience, the Selects clawed back in the top of the fifth; Brent Furtney singled and scored on Brown's RBI single, before Brown stole second and came in on another RBI single from Ryrie, knotting the game at 3.

Not to be denied, however, the Black Sox again took control in the bottom of the fifth when Clayfield scored the go-ahead run on a defensive error.

The Selects would threaten in the seventh, advancing the tying run to third with only one out before Black Sox hurler Marc Geddes induced a pair of grounders to get out of the jam and secure a 4-3 Black Sox win.

Hoffman notched six strikeouts in five innings in the loss, while Brent Furtney threw well in his first appearance of the young season, giving up an unearned run and striking out one in one inning of relief.
