Late Rally Drops Selects

Selects vs. Diamond Jaxx

Monday, July 12, 2010

On a night where the Selects certainly played well enough to win, a few judgement calls late in the game sealed their fate and made a 2-2 tie very tough to swallow.

After reaching on an error for the first time this season, and making his way to third base on a couple of past balls, Mike Brown scored the first run of the game on a Brent Furtney ground ball to the third baseman.

The Diamond Jaxx responded in the second to even things up at one. It then became a bit of a pitchers duel as Doug Hoffman and Kevin Clugston were able to shut down the bats until Selects' pinch hitter Dan Fogal drove a ball into right field cashing the go ahead run in the 5th.

It remained that way until the seventh when the Selects were once again knocking on the door. With Kevin Ryrie standing on third base, a fly ball to the right fielder, off the Bat of Brent Furtney, had Ryrie thinking insurance run. Kevin's head-first dive appeared to have beat the trow but on appeal it was ruled he missed the plate thus keeping the score 2-1.

In the bottom of the inning, a call at the plate went the other way as a single through the hole on the right side got to Reed Laughlin who fired the ball home. A sweeping tag by Ryrie at the plate appeared to have caught the baserunner on the leg, however it was ruled he missed the tag and the Jaxx run tied the game.

A tough end to a well played ball game.
