SELECTS WIN 40TH ANNUAL BRUSSELS INVITATIONAL

Sunday, July 24, 2011

The Selects won their first tournament in six years over the weekend, outscoring their opponents 19-6 in the 40th Annual Brussels Invitational tournament. Kitchener opened the weekend with a 6-2 win over the Belmore Stingers, and followed that up with a convincing 7-0 victory over the Melbourne Mercs. After receiving a bye to the championship game, the Selects built up a 5-0 lead against Harwood Corners and held on for a 6-4 win.

Doug Hoffman threw three excellent games, including a five-inning no-hitter against Melbourne, allowing the Selects' shorthanded 10-man roster to preserve its energy. Hoffman's teammates supplied the necessary offensive support with a strong team effort throughout the weekend.

Glen Hall led the offense, hitting 6-10 with a double, a hit-by-pitch, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored, while Brussels' own Jamie Hickling thrived in his hometown, going 4-10 with 2 doubles, a hit-by-pitch, a walk, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Kevin Ryrie added 2 RBIs and 4 runs, while Mike Brown had an RBI and 4 runs. Mike Welton and Scott Clark each put up 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Including league games, the Selects have now strung together eight consecutive wins and will look to carry that momentum through the rest of their KFL season and into the Ontario Challenge Cup in September.
